Do Cats Need Walks, Too?

“Walk Your Pet Month” (January 2019) reminds pet owners to exercise their pets. Like people, cats need times of play and exercise to keep them nimble and quick. Whether your feline will enjoy outdoor cat walking, however, is another story. Our veterinarians at Casillas Veterinary Hospitals in Montebello, Lynwood, and East Los Angeles encourage you to find healthy activities your cat can enjoy to keep them healthy, happy, and fit.

Do Cats Need Walks?

Your cat may not need a walk per se, but they may appreciate spending time outdoors. Cats are great explorers. They love to smell and touch and experience what’s new. Your yard can provide kitty with a whole new world to discover. They may enjoy chasing butterflies, sneaking up on squirrels, or rolling around on the grass. By initiating outdoor playtime with your cat, you double the pleasure and fun they experience.

Benefits of Cat Walking

Walking gives your cat a wider expanse to explore, which could increase their poise and confidence. Cat walking could help shy cats lose some of their timidity while encouraging wild cats to calm down. At the same time, your pet gets fresh air and exercise to keep them frisky and fit. If our veterinarian suggests your cat lose a few pounds, try adding walking to their daily exercise regimen.

How to Leash Train a Cat

The first step to cat walking is training kitty on a leash. Leash training should begin indoors. First, buy a harness and let your cat bite and play with it for a while to show them it poses no threat or harm. Then, put the harness on your cat and let them wear it around the house, dragging the leash behind them. Once kitty is comfortable with the harness and leash, take them outside, holding onto the leash as you go. Give them space to walk around and explore with you by their side. Take them out as often as possible until they become accustomed to walking on a daily basis.
