Caring For Your Senior Pet

Senior Health Care Awareness From Your Montebello Veterinarian

If you have a senior pet, chances are that they are a beloved part of your family. After all, they have likely given you years of love and affection. However, as pets get older, they may have new veterinary needs. Meeting these needs is important if you want their senior years to be happy and healthy, and the staff at our veterinary hospital understands that.

Increased Frequency of Vet Visits

Given the speed at which dogs and cats age, a yearly vet visit is like a human going to the vet once every six years or so. Understandably, a lot can change in a year for a dog or cat. It is generally recommended that senior pets visit the vet for a check-up every six months. This way, we can keep an eye out for subtle changes that might signal problems at an early, treatable stage. The age at which a pet is considered a senior depends on size and species, but it is generally around 7 years old.

What to Look Out For

Behavioral changes can be the first sign that something is wrong with your senior pet. If your dog or cat seems "off," or is behaving differently than usual, a visit to the veterinary hospital is in order. Older pets may be in pain or displaying symptoms of a painless disorder such as diabetes. They may have any of a number of different symptoms:

  • Increased or decreased appetite
  • Increased or decreased urination
  • Coughing or trouble breathing
  • Weakness or difficulty moving
  • Lack of interest in walking or playing
  • Blood in the urine
  • Increased number of accidents in the house

It is important to remember that you know your pet best. Often, the first sign of illness or pain in senior dog or cat is something that might be overlooked by a person who doesn't know them. If you think that something might be wrong with your pet, make an appointment with us at Casillas Veterinary Hospitals.

What are Some Changes that Might Need to be Made?

Because of their changing bodies, senior pets might need some accommodations:

  • Different food
  • Softer beds or more of them
  • More access to potty spots
  • Increased protection from the elements
  • Changes in vaccination protocols
  • Steps or ramps
  • More vigilant parasite control
  • Gentler forms of exercise

Please feel free to ask us about changes that might help your senior pet live a happier life. Many of the things that you can do for your pet are easy and can make a big difference.
