Cold Weather Dangers in California?

Cold Weather Dangers in California?

You may not worry much about putting your pet outside for the night in southern California. Even the coldest nights in Los Angeles don’t get much below 32! Still, pets in our area face some danger when left outside for long periods of time in winter. At Casillas Veterinary Hospitals, we do our best to educate community pet owners about the dangers of leaving their pets outside on long winter nights.

Risk of Illness

Most pets won’t die of hypothermia when left outside for an evening in the middle of winter. Even so, many pets become more vulnerable to illness and diseases when sleeping outdoors in uncomfortable or unsafe weather. If your pet sleeps outdoors, or spends much of his or her time outside, watch out for the following symptoms of illness:

  • Lethargy
  • High fever
  • Nasal discharge
  • Weight loss
  • Dehydration
  • Cough
  • Loud or rapid breathing

Pets who display these symptoms need to visit the vet as soon as possible. These could be signs of pneumonia! If allowed to progress, your pet’s illness could become very serious. Taking your pet to the veterinarian is critically important.

Make Your Pet Comfortable

Your pet needs a dry, warm bed to sleep in the evening. If your pet has an outdoor house, inspect it on a regular basis for leaks and drafts. Make repairs to your pet's accommodations as necessary to ensure that your pet's shelter is adequate. If possible, provide your pet with a heated bed for chilly evenings.

Know When to Bring Your Pet Inside for the Night

Pay attention to the weather forecast every evening. If the temperature is predicted to drop, bring your pet into the garage for the night. To do this, you may need to prepare the garage in advance. Move any toxic substances, like antifreeze, out of your pet’s reach so he or she will be safe staying in your garage for an evening.

When putting your pet back outside, check your pet's water and food to ensure that it isn't frozen. If your pet's water or food freezes, replace it with water or food that has been thawed.
