Vaccinations

Vaccinations

Casillas Veterinary Hospitals provide vaccinations for dogs and cats. By vaccinating your pet you are helping prevent many illnesses and diseases that could affect your pet.

How Vaccines Work

Vaccines are designed to stimulate your pet's immune system into producing antibodies for certain diseases. The vaccines contain altered viruses or pieces of dead viruses that can no longer cause infection but can still create an immune system response in your pet. The immune system response is the creation of antibodies. This means that if your pet is exposed to the live disease after being vaccinated these antibodies will kill the live virus before it makes your pet sick.

The alternative is not vaccinating your pet and waiting until he or she gets sick. This is not preferable as some pet diseases cannot be cured or they are exceptionally difficult to cure. The most common way to receive a vaccine is through injection, but some vaccines are designed to be taken by mouth or by inhalation.

Vaccinations at our Montebello Animal Hospital

Vaccinating your pet is a cost effective way to keep your pet healthy and happy. Our veterinarian in Montebello offers core and non-core vaccines for cats and dogs. Core vaccines are vaccines that should be given to every pet regardless of whether they are an indoor or outdoor pet. Non-core vaccines are recommended for pets that are determined to be high-risk for contracting certain diseases.

All dogs should receive vaccinations for rabies, distemper, parvovirus and adenovirus. Some vaccines require multiple initial doses before full immunity occurs. Our veterinarian will determine if your pet needs any additional vaccines and help you come up with a vaccination schedule.

Cats should be vaccinated against rabies, distemper, herpes and calicivirus. Most core cat vaccines need to be administered twice between three and four weeks apart. Our veterinarian can help you determine an appropriate vaccination schedule for your cat.
