Pet Arthritis

Arthritis isn't a condition that only affects humans, your pet can develop arthritis as well. This condition is most commonly seen in older pets, but younger dogs and cats can develop it as well. It is important that you can recognize the signs of arthritis so that our veterinarians at Casillas Veterinary Hospitals in Montebello, Lynwood, and East Los Angeles can create a treatment plan to make your beloved pet more comfortable and mobile.

Pet Arthritis

Limping

Limping is one of the most common symptoms of arthritis. Your animal will start to favor the legs that aren't affected by arthritis. In many cases, the limp is more pronounced after your pet has been lying down for a while. The limp can become less noticeable as he or she starts moving around.

Difficulty Moving

Your companion animal may be reluctant to move around. For example, your dog may have trouble getting up and down the stairs or in and out of the car that were once easily manageable. If you have a cat, arthritis can make it difficult for him or her to jump on tables and countertops.

Spinal Issues

Arthritis can cause changes in your pet's spine. These changes can cause a hump to develop in your animal's back, sore neck, or lameness of your pet's hind legs.

Easily Tired

Arthritis can make your furry friend to tire out quickly. If you have a dog, he or she may not be able to handle long walks anymore. Also, your animal may spend more time sleeping or resting if he or she has the condition.

Irritability

The pain associated with arthritis can make your pet irritable. If you handle or pet your animal while in pain, he or she might snap or lash out.

Licking and Biting

It is not uncommon for a pet with arthritis to lick or bite the affected joint. If the condition is severe, your furry pet can lose fur and have inflamed skin due to the frequent licking and biting.
