Holiday Fun With Your Pet in Montebello, Commerce and Lynwood
The holidays are coming, and it’s only natural that you’d want to enjoy them with your pet. After all, pets are part of the family, too, right? At Casillas Veterinary Hospital, we encourage everyone to show their love by sharing their special days with their pets, but only within reason. Use common sense before exposing pets to new situations, and always research safety concerns to keep the holidays happy and healthy.
East Los Angeles Vet Discusses Holiday Pet Fun
Most pet lovers want to share everything about the holidays with their dogs and cats, but not everything is safe or appropriate. Check out safety rules before adding holiday cheer into your pet’s life.
In East Los Angeles, the weather doesn’t always cooperate when you want to dress your dog or cat up in festive holiday sweaters. Pay attention to the weather before giving your pet a makeover. If it’s too warm outside for a full outfit, try substituting a festive collar or decorated leash instead.
Our vet recommends that you research carefully before giving your dog or cat scraps from the holiday table. Many of your favorite foods can be dangerous or deadly. For example:
- Chocolate is a well-known poison, but did you know the sweetener in sugarless gum and candy, xylitol, can be just as dangerous?
- Grapes and raisins are bad for dogs as well as cats
- Never give turkey, goose or other poultry bones for dogs to chew. They can splinter, lodging in their windpipe
Putting a festive collar on your dog and taking it along with you caroling might seem like a fun activity, but it all depends on the dog. If your pet is used to being walked among plenty of strangers, it might be a fun activity that it will love. If your pet gets too excited around strangers to ever think of behaving, pick another way to spend time with your dog.
The holidays are a special time for all families, including their furry members, but accidents can happen at any time of the year.
