Our veterinarians at Casillas Veterinary Hospitals in East Los Angeles, Lynwood and Montebello are dedicated to helping to keep your senior dog or cat healthy. Our veterinarians can even provide end-of-life care to ensure your pet is comfortable. Dogs and cats are generally considered seniors between the ages of 7 and 10.
Common Health Conditions in Geriatric Dogs and Cats
Geriatric dogs and cats are prone to developing the same chronic and acute conditions and senior humans. The most common ailments include an increase in infections, especially oral infections and bladder infections. Older pets can also develop lung, kidney and heart problems as well as diabetes, arthritis, poor sight and hearing and muscle weakness. Thankfully, veterinary medicine has advanced greatly over the last decade, and we can now successfully manage many chronic and acute conditions, even moderate to severe arthritis.
Senior Wellness Examinations at our Veterinary Hospital
One of the best things you can do for your geriatric dog or cat is to schedule regular wellness visits at our veterinary hospital. This helps catch chronic and acute ailments before they severely impact your dog or cat’s quality of life. When you bring your older dog or cat into our office for a visit, our veterinarian will examine his or her eyes, ears, nose, mouth and throat. We will check your dog or cat’s skin, fur and claws will be examined, and he or she will be weighed. We will also check your pet’s chest, abdomen and butt and ask you if you have noticed any behavioral changes. If any abnormalities are found, we may suggest additional tests in order to confirm a diagnosis and recommend a course of treatment. If your pet is at the end of his or her life, we can provide end-of-life care.
