Dogs are like family to many of us and they are almost considered just one of the people living in our house. When it comes to food though, dogs are different and some foods are very bad for them, and even fatal in some cases. At Casillas Veterinary Hospitals, we want to see your dog stay healthy, and we can help if he or she happens to get into the wrong type of food. We are your local veterinarian and have animal hospitals in the Montebello, East Los Angeles, and Lynwood communities.
Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Dog
Chocolate and caffeine. We all know about chocolate, but coffee and caffeine are in the same family. They all contain methylxanthines, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea, excessive thirst, and an abnormal heart rate.
Alcohol is poison for dogs. It can cause the same issues as chocolate, as well as difficulty breathing, coma, and even death.
Citrus, or juice in heavy amounts, can cause nervous system depression.
Milk and dairy products. Dogs do not possess the enzyme that breaks down the lactose in milk, and that can lead to diarrhea and general digestive upset.
Raw meat or eggs. These substances can contain salmonella and E. Coli, which is harmful to both pets and humans. Raw meat and bones would be natural for wild animals, but not for domesticated dogs.
Xylitol, a substance in candy, toothpaste, and baked goods, and it can cause a dog’s blood sugar to drop dangerously low leading to liver failure.
Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure which can be fatal in some cases.
Sugar. Too much sugar can cause the same problem it causes in people. It can make them gain weight.
High-fat foods. Some dogs do not digest these very well, and they should be avoided.
